Revision Rhinoplasty
Nasal Reshaping
Revision Rhinoplasty differs from primary Rhinoplasty surgery and is also more challenging. These are some of the considerations presented by Revision Rhinoplasty:
- Since the distorted cartilage was removed in the primary Rhinoplasty procedure, in order to straighten the nose and restore nasal function, there may not be enough cartilage remaining for reconstruction during this surgery. So, the cartilage has to be taken from somewhere else. If needed, it is borrowed from behind the ear (auricular graft) and used to restore the desired nasal form and function. This requires a small incision that is well hidden behind the ear, and that does not altar the size or shape of the ear itself.
- Scar tissue may exist in the nasal lining from the primary Rhinoplasty surgery. This adds to the complexity of this surgery, and increases the surgical time.
- Telangectasias (little spider like veins) may appear after primary Rhinoplasty surgery. These are not caused by the surgery (they already exist), but can become more visible after the surgery. Following Revision surgery, the appearance of these may become even more pronounced depending upon your skin type, texture and thickness. You must know, however, that the benefits of the surgery far outweigh the appearance of Telangectasias.
If you are considering Revision Rhinoplasty surgery – it’s important to consider these aspects and also to understand what our patients tell us - that the rewards far outweigh these considerations. When you look at facial plastic surgeons – you should also understand that board certified surgeons have attained unique qualifications, experience and skill that other surgeons may not have. Dr. Choe is double board certified which places him among a special group of surgeons who perform surgeries of the head and neck only – he is a specialist.
